Vibe coding with AI coding agents

LAST UPDATED 2026-09-14 · BY ORCYX LABS

What vibe coding is, and the terms around it

Checked against the Orcyx source tree at c339cf993 on 2026-09-14. The Orcyx behaviour below restates the seats, swarm and docs-index pages; the term definitions are general usage, not Orcyx claims. Where this page describes something the build does not do yet, it says so in place rather than describing the intention.

Vibe coding is building software by describing what you want in plain language and accepting what an AI coding agent produces, with little or no reading of the code. It sits on a spectrum of ways to work with AI coding tools, and the useful difference between the points on that spectrum is who checks the output.

TermWhat it meansWho checks the output
Vibe codingDescribe the goal, accept the result, iterate on behaviour rather than code.Mostly nobody, until something breaks.
AI pair programmingOne assistant works beside you in the same file, turn by turn. You, line by line, as it happens.
Agentic codingAn agent plans, edits files, runs commands and iterates on a whole task, often alongside other agents.Depends on the setup: you, a reviewing agent, or automated checks.
Governed agentsAgentic coding with isolation, a review step and a record around every agent.A review step plus checks that can refuse a commit.

Orcyx is an agentic development environment: it does not pick one of these styles for you. It runs the coding CLIs you already pay for and adds the isolation, review and record that make any of them safer to scale. The longer comparison is vibe coding vs governed agents.

Where vibe coding breaks down

Vibe coding fails in ordinary ways, and they get worse with more than one agent. None of these is a model-quality problem; each is a missing check.

  • Agents overwrite each other. Two agents in one checkout read each other's half-finished files, and a type check run by one fails on the other's in-flight edit.
  • Unreviewed code reaches users. A committed secret, an unvalidated input or an unsafe pattern ships because nobody read the diff.
  • Duplicate work. Two agents solving the same problem is a merge conflict you scheduled in advance.
  • No way back. When an agent changes the wrong thing, the fix is only cheap if you can see what it did and restore the previous state.

A safer vibe-coding workflow in five steps

You do not need all five at once. The order puts the controls that catch the most expensive mistakes first, and each step names what Orcyx does and what you do by hand.

  • Step 1: One git worktree per agent. Each agent gets its own checkout and branch, so parallel agents cannot overwrite one another. Orcyx creates one for every agent pane and every code-changing swarm role; by hand, see git worktrees for AI coding agents.
  • Step 2: Checks that can refuse. Put tests, lint and a secret scan in the repository's pre-commit hook, because a failing hook stops the commit. The Orcyx review gate scans a finished role's files for committed secrets, unsafe code patterns and CSP problems, but it is advisory and does not block.
  • Step 3: Read the diff, or have a reviewer read it first. A reviewing agent can flag what you should look at, but it only helps if someone acts on the flag. The merge decision stays yours.
  • Step 4: Commit only what each agent owns. Path-restricted commits keep one agent's unfinished work out of another's commit, and avoid tree-wide commands such as hard resets and a bare stash.
  • Step 5: Keep the record and the checkpoints. Orcyx writes every pane and swarm run to a per-workspace Ledger, and keeps shadow-repository checkpoints of a workspace with diff and restore, so a bad change is visible and reversible.

What this does not make safe

None of this makes agent output correct. Isolation stops overwriting, not incompatible changes, which still surface as merge conflicts. A review step catches problems only if someone looks, and the gate cannot refuse a merge. Orcyx is pre-1.0, and where the current build does not do something yet, the docs say so in place.

Vibe coding with Claude Code, Codex and other CLIs

Orcyx does not run models, so the five steps apply to whichever coding CLI you seat: Claude Code, Codex, Gemini CLI and the others listed on the agent integrations page. Running several at once is covered in run multiple AI coding agents in parallel, and mixing two vendors in Claude Code and Codex together.
